Kowloon Motor Bus ("KMB") placed an initial order of 20 NEOPLAN Centroliners and the first of them arrived in Hong Kong in September 1998. The bus was registered as HY 1677 and was allocated AP1 as the fleet number in early 1999. Before the registration, the bus was one of the exhibits in the UITP Exhibition (Hong Kong) held in October 1998.

NEOPLAN Centroliners are low-floor double-deckers with 12 metres in length. These 20 Centroliners are powered by Cummins M11-305E engines with ZF 5HP590 transmission.

After a series of trials, the Centroliners entered service on 1 August 1999. The first route that these buses were allocated is 296C, which runs between Sheung Tak in Tseung Kwan O and Tonkin Street in Sham Shui Po.

In October 2003, a NEOPLAN Centroliner with wide-bodied, straight staircase and plug door started passenger service. The fleet number assigned to this bus is APM1.
